Up Next: Brookmeyer & Wheeler's "Island"

7/25/2016

Picture

Wednesday, August 20th @ 9pm

The Ryan Shultz Five will be performing Bob Brookmeyer and Kenny Wheeler’s 2003 release Island.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Two giants of modern jazz align for Bob Brookmeyer & Kenny Wheeler Quintet Island. Here, valve trombone master Bob Brookmeyer and trumpet legend Kenny Wheeler project warmth and nuance atop a traditional drums/bass/piano based quintet setting as Wheeler's relatively infamous, yearning lines and climactically constructed lyricism remain consistent throughout. The duo alternates soloing activities while also coalescing for softly stated choruses during these predominately medium-tempo jazz works. On this release, pianist Frank Carlberg provided complementary melodies amid the rhythm section's buoyantly constructed undercurrents. The band pursues sanguine balladry amid the lead soloists' often engaging dialogues, although Wheeler reaches for the stars via a series of nicely articulated high notes on "Upstairs With Beatrice." With this piece, the always-inventive drummer John Hollenbeck peppers his toms in support of the trumpeter's ascending mode of attack." ~Glenn Astarita

Up Next: Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderley

7/6/2016

Picture

Wednesday, July 20th @ 9pm
The Mardra & Reggie Thomas Ensemble will be performing Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley from 1961.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“An excellent collaboration of Nancy Wilson's voice with Cannonball Adderley's alto sax from the early 60's. Not entirely a vocal album, five of the 12 cuts are instrumentals. A highlight is the gentle cornet playing of Nat Adderley behind Wilson, especially on "Save Your Love for Me" and "The Old Country". Cannonball Adderley's swinging, boppish sax is heard to excellent effect throughout. Joe Zawinul's work behind Wilson on "The Masquerade Is Over" demonstrates that he is a talented, sensitive accompanist and on the other end of the spectrum, Adderley's alto offers a lovely slow tempo treatment of the Vernon Duke-Ira Gershwin masterpiece
"I Can't Get Started." To keep the listeners on their musical toes, the first couple of bars of "Save Your Love for Me" are quotes from "So What" from the Miles Davis Sextet's seminal Kind of Blue session. Given the play list and the outstanding artists performing it, why any serious jazz collection would be without this classic album is difficult to comprehend.” ~Dave Nathan
