November 15: Booker T. & The M.G.'S "McLemore Avenue"

10/25/2017

Wednesday, November 15th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is stretching out once again this month presenting The Heavy Sounds performing Booker T & the M.G.’s 1970 release of "McLemore Avenue", a tribute to the Beatles' Abbey Road.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Booker T. Jones was so taken with the Beatles' Abbey Road, he claims he had to respond just to say "thanks" and recorded McLemore Avenue, a cover version of the entire Abbey Road album in three long medleys (that approximated the structure of the Beatles' album). The MG's even aped the Beatles' cover photo, with the band strolling down McLemore Avenue, the home of Stax Records. Booker T. & the MG's turned an already hip record into one that was funky as hell and one that kept listeners guessing by rearranging the order of the tunes to suit the MG's. Not only is McLemore Avenue a stellar interpretation of Abbey Road, it's one of the finest Booker T. & the MG's albums to boot." -Thom Jurek

Wednesday, November 8th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present a DOUBLE SHOW on Wednesday November 8th! At 9pm Andy Brown & Dennis Carroll will kick things off with Jim Hall & Ron Carter's Alone Together from 1974. Then at 10pm The Peter Saxe Trio will conclude with McCoy Tyner's Inception from 1962.

I. ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Alone Together is long considered a classic and a revelation to listeners who had taken guitarist Jim Hall for granted, this set of duets with bassist Ron Carter has near-telepathic communication between the two musicians and quiet music full of inner tension and fire. Hall and Carter brought in an original apiece and also collaborated on six standards, including "St. Thomas," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Autumn Leaves," and "Alone Together." Introspective and thought-provoking music.”
- Scott Yanow

PERFORMANCES BY:
Andy Brown - guitar
Dennis Carroll - bass

II. ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Inception is one of several trio sessions that Tyner recorded while he was working with Coltrane, and it demonstrates an altogether different side of this  profoundly influential artist. The impossibly fluid lines that Tyner spins on virtually every track are even more intricate and sustained than those which he produced in the confines of the Coltrane group, and they are executed with a touch that is almost unbelievably light. Tyner seems to dance his way effortlessly through this material, and the result is a sublimely joyful, almost rapturous listening experience.”

PERFORMANCES BY:
Peter Saxe - Piano
John Sims - Bass
George Fludas - Drums

Oct 18th: Stan Getz "Sweet Rain"

10/7/2017

Picture
Wednesday, October 18th at 9pm
The Jazz Record Art Collective presents the Greg Fishman Quartet performing Stan Getz’ 1967 release, Sweet Rain.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
Sweet Rain was Stan Getz's first major artistic coup after he closed the book on his bossa nova period, featuring an adventurous young group that pushed him to new heights in his solo statements. Pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate were all schooled in concept of rhythm-section freedom which allowed their interplay to open things up for Getz's long, soulful explorations.

Chick Corea's subtle touch leaves plenty of room for Getz's ideas alongside the busily shifting rhythms of the bass and drums, heard to best effect in Corea's challenging opener "Litha." The repertoire also features another Corea original "Windows", the typically lovely Jobim tune "O Grande Amor," and Dizzy Gillespie's Latin-flavored "Con Alma." The quartet's level of musicianship remains high on every selection and the marvelously consistent atmosphere the album places it among Getz' very best. A surefire classic.
