Paul Mutzabaugh Sextet performs Chick Corea & Return to Forever's Light as a Feather, recorded in 1972.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
Light as a Feather is the second studio album of fusion band Return to Forever, led by pianist Chick Corea. From a historical perspective, this is the most important effort of Corea's career, quite different than his prior previous progressive or improvising efforts, and the pivotal beginning of his career as the most popular contemporary jazz keyboardist in history. The original album features Chick Corea on keys, Flora Purim on vocals/percussion, Joe Farrell on tenor saxophone/flute, Stanley Clarke on double bass and Airto Moreira on drums.

Light as a Feather won the 1972 Playboy Jazz Album of the year and has been selected by many magazines and polls as one of the greatest jazz records ever recorded. For many years this record has been  also listed for years on the Stereophile Magazine list of "Records to Die For." It is also featured in Tom Moon's 1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die.

Wednesday, April 20th at 9pm

The Andy Brown Trio will be performing A Night at the Vanguard by the Kenny Burrell Trio.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
A Night at the Vanguard was a live album recorded in 1959 at the Village Vanguard, a jazz club located in Greenwich Village, New York City. The club was opened in 1935 by Max Gordon as a forum for poets and artists as well as a site for musical performances. By 1957 Gordon put jazz acts at the top of the bill and was a host to many recording sessions that are regarded as masterpieces in its basement with players such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Bill Evans.

The original album features Kenny Burrell on guitar, Richard Davis on Bass and Roy Haynes on drums.

Michael G. Nastos of allmusic.com states, "For music done in 1959, this is heady, seat-of-the-pants, brilliantly executed jazz that is mostly based in standards, but stretched to exacting tolerances that bend, but are not close to breaking. This is Burrell and his extraordinary trio very close to, if not truly in their prime, and their element."

TO BE PERFORMED BY:
Andy Brown - Guitar
Joe Policastro - Bass
Mikel Avery - Drums
