Wednesday, May 17th at 9pm
The Scott Hesse Trio will be performing Jim Hall's 1975 release Jim Hall Live! in its entirety.

BACKGROUND:

Jim Hall Live! was recorded in 1975 at the Bourbon Street jazz club in Toronto, Canada and released on Horizon Records. The album features guitarist Jim Hall in Toronto with two of the top Canadian jazzmen, bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke. The interplay between the three players is sometimes wondrous, and although the five selections are all familiar standards (such as "Round Midnight," "Scrapple from the Apple," and "The Way You Look Tonight"), Hall makes the music sound fresh and full of subtleties. - Scott Yanow

April: Keep Your Soul Together + Ellis & Tom

Wednesday, April 12th at 9pm:
The Emma Dayhuff Quintet will be performing trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's 1973 release, Keep Your Soul Together. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's CTI recordings have long been underrated and a bit downgraded by writers who get them confused with his much commercial output for Columbia. On this album Hubbard is heard in fine form on four of his originals (highlighted by "Spirits of Trane") with a septet that includes tenor-saxophonist Junior Cook, keyboardist George Cables, guitarist Aurell Ray, either Kent Brinkley or Ron Carter on bass, drummer Ralph Penland and Juno Lewis on percussion. The music is sometimes funky but definitely creative jazz with Hubbard heard during his prime period.

Performances by:
Emma Dayhuff - Bass
Marques Carroll - Trumpet
Rajiv Halim - Sax
Rob Clearfield - Keys
Clif Wallace - Drums

The Young/Million Brazilian Project (an orchestra led by vocalist Sarah Marie Young and pianist Steve Million) will be performing the bossa nova album ELIS & TOM by Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim from 1974 in its entirety. This beautiful -- and now legendary -- recording date between iconic Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and composer, conductor, and arranger Tom Jobim is widely regarded as one of the greatest Brazilian pop recordings. It is nearly ubiquitous among Brazilians as a household item. Regina's voice is among the most loved in the history of Brazilian music. Her range and acuity, her unique phrasing, and her rainbow of emotional colors are literally unmatched, and no matter the tune or arrangement, she employs most of them on these 14 cuts.

Performances by:

Steve Million - Keyboard
Sarah Marie Young - Vocals
Guy King - Vocals, Guitar
Steve Eisen - Flute
Jim Gailloreto - Flute
Neal Alger - Guitar
Paul Mutzabaugh - Auxiliary Keys, E Bass
Luiz Ewerling - Drums
