9/25/2017

Wednesday, October 11th at 9pm
The Jazz Record Art Collective presents the Rodrigo Villanueva Quartet performing Chick Corea’s Three Quartets.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
Three Quartets is a jazz album released in 1981 by American jazz pianist Chick Corea, in collaboration with saxophonist Michael Brecker, bassist Eddie Gómez and drummer Steve Gadd. All compositions are by Corea who wanted to create an album of quartets like the many string quartets of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionist periods; however, he would use jazz instrumentation.

"Quartet
No. 1" uses a 1-chord (G altered) solo vamp over a rock beat in 3/4, and a repeated theme that uses stacked fourths. The second track, "Quartet No. 2 (Part I)" is a ballad, dedicated to Duke Ellington, incorporating many of the Western classical harmonies and tensions that Ellington used in much of his playing. "Quartet No. 2 (Part II)" is dedicated to jazz saxophone legend John Coltrane.

October 5th: Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats"

9/14/2017

Thursday, October 5th at 9pm
The Jazz Record Art Collective presents the Chris Siebold Octet performing Frank Zappa’s 1969 release Hot Rats.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
Hot Rats is Zappa's second solo album and first recording after the dissolution of the Mothers of Invention by Frank Zappa.  Ian Underwood is the only member of the Mothers to appear on the album as Zappa's primary collaborator. Other featured musicians were bassists Max Bennett and Shuggie Otis; drummers John Guerin, Paul Humphrey and Ron Selico; and electric violinists Don "Sugarcane" Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty. This album was recorded on 16-track equipment and one of the first albums to use this technology.

"Hot Rats' genius lies in the way it fuses the compositional sophistication of jazz with rock's down-and-dirty attitude -- there's a real looseness and grit to the three lengthy jams, and a surprising, wry elegance to the three shorter, tightly arranged numbers (particularly the sumptuous "Peaches en Regalia"). Zappa's wonderfully scuzzy, distorted tone is an especially good fit on "Willie the Pimp," with its greasy blues riffs and guest vocalist Captain Beefheart." -Steve Huey
