Wednesday, August 28th at 9pm: We kick off night one of our Chicago Jazz Festival and JRAC Anniversary Series with Paul Giallorenzo Trio performing Herbie Nichols’ "LOVE, GLOOM, CASH, LOVE", released in 1957. ALBUM BACKGROUND: “Recorded a year after his last landmark Blue Note dates, this album finds Nichols performing in the familiar trio setting again -- this time with Mingus drummer Dannie Richmond and bassist George Duvivier. These performances may be less animated than Nichols' earlier sides as a leader, but that's not to suggest the pianist's writing or playing had become pedestrian or predictable. . Richmond's characteristic bombast and humor are kept in check here. With the drummer maintaining straight, subdued rhythms, Nichols' complex melodies and solos shine that much brighter -- especially on such standout originals as the album's title track, "Beyond Recall," and "S'Crazy Pad." ~Brian Betty PERFORMANCES BY: Paul Giallorenzo – Piano Anton Hatwich – Bass Quin Kirchner – Drums ADMISSION & LOCATION: $10 admission. Cash only. Doors open at 8pm. Show starts at 9pm. Fulton Street Collective 1821 W. Hubbard St. (3rd Floor) Chicago, IL 60612 |
Thursday, August 29th at 3:15pm: The Jazz Record Art Collective is honored to be chosen again to be part of the Chicago Jazz Festival. The John Wojciechowski Quintet will be reprising their performance of Adderley’s "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!" from 1966. ***This performance will be held at the Claudia Cassidy Theater inside the Chicago Cultural Center. Free admission!*** ALBUM BACKGROUND: "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at "The Club" received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance – Group or Soloist with Group in 1967. Though the original liner notes state that it was recorded at the Club DeLisa in Chicago, it was actually recorded at Capitol's Hollywood studio with an invited audience and an open bar. The reason for this discrepancy, according to the liner notes in the CD reissue, is that Adderley and the new manager of Club DeLisa (which had been renamed "The Club", after operating for years in Chicago under its old name) were friends, and Adderley offered to give the club a bit of free publicity.” -Wikipedia PERFORMANCES BY: John Wojciechowski - Alto Tito Carrillo - Trumpet Joey Skoch - Piano Dennis Carroll - Bass George Fludas - Drums ADMISSION & LOCATION: FREE admission. Show starts at 3:15pm. Claudia Cassidy Theater @ Chicago Cultural Center 77 E. Randolph St. |
Thursday, August 29th at 9pm: Night two we're proud to present the Sam Mosching Quartet performing John Coltrane’s "Crescent", released in 1964. ALBUM BACKGROUND: “John Coltrane's ‘Crescent’ from the spring of 1964 is an epic album, showing his meditative side that would serve as a perfect prelude to his immortal work A Love Supreme. His finest quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones supports the somewhat softer side of Coltrane, and while not completely in ballad style, the focus and accessible tone of this recording work wonders for anyone willing to sit back and let this music enrich and wash over you.” ~Michael G. Nastos PERFORMANCES BY: Isaiah Collier - Sax Samuel Mösching - Guitar Wesley Morgan - Bass Nick Kabat – Drums ADMISSION & LOCATION: $10 admission. Cash only. Doors open at 8pm. Show starts at 9pm. Friday, August 30th at 9pm: Night three we're excited to feature the Alyssa Allgood Quartet performing a night of Dinah Washington selections. ALBUM BACKGROUND: “Dinah Washington was at once one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century -- beloved to her fans, devotees, and fellow singers; controversial to critics…Hers was a gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, marked by absolute clarity of diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing. Washington's personal life was turbulent, with seven marriages behind her, and her interpretations showed it, for she displayed a tough, totally unsentimental, yet still gripping hold on the universal subject of lost love." ~Richard S. Ginell PERFORMANCES BY: Alyssa Allgood - Vocals Mike Allemana - Guitar Dennis Carroll - Bass George Fludas – Drums ADMISSION & LOCATION: $10 admission. Cash only. Doors open at 8pm. Show starts at 9pm. Fulton Street Collective 1821 W. Hubbard St. (3rd Floor) Chicago, IL 60612 |
Sunday September 1st at 9pm: On Sunday night we conclude our Chicago Jazz Festival and JRAC Anniversary Series with the Chad McCullough Orchestra performing Miles Davis’ "Porgy and Bess", released in 1959. ALBUM BACKGROUND: "Take George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, add Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans, and what do you get? A classic jazz album that--despite the fact that the material has been rendered almost overly familiar due to countless interpretations--still sounds remarkably fresh four decades after its initial release. Miles' soft yet piercing trumpet style is perfectly suited to Gershwin's melancholy melodies, Evans' musical direction of his 18-piece orchestra is impeccable, and their version of "Summertime" may well be the finest ever waxed. Davis and Evans teamed up for several recordings after this one (including the landmark Sketches of Spain), but Porgy & Bess still stands as one of their most successful collaborations." ~Dan Epstein PERFORMANCES BY: Conducted by Joe Clark Trumpet/Leader - Chad McCullough Woodwinds - Jim Gailloreto, Sharel Cassity, Rich Moore, Rajiv Halim Trumpets - Roger Ingram, Art Davis, Mark Buselli, Connor Druhan French Horns - Liz Deitemyer, Debra Miller, Gary English Trombones - Andy Baker, Russ Phillips, Raphael Crawford, Steve Duncan Tuba - Ryan Miller Bass - Christian Dillingham Drums - Greg Artry ADMISSION & LOCATION: $15 admission.
