Featuring five nights of performances held at the Fulton Street Collective beginning Tuesday, August 31st and ending Sunday, September 5th. Tuesday, August 31st at 8pm: We'll kick off our 8th year anniversary series with Geof Bradfield's Garden of Souls performing Old and New Dreams' "Playing", released in 1981. The night will also showcase live art by Jen Lau! ALBUM BACKGROUND: "This Austrian concert CD features the four notable Ornette Coleman alumni (trumpeter Don Cherry, tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Ed Blackwell) stretching out on three of Ornette's tunes, plus a song apiece from Cherry, Redman and Haden. Although Cherry's chops were not quite in peak form anymore, Redman is consistently stirring." ~Scott Yanow PERFORMANCES BY: Geof Bradfield - Tenor Nick Mazzarella - Alto Joshua Abrams - Bass Dana Hall - Drums LIVESTREAM ACCESS: https://youtu.be/8CxPcSTBn0g |
Wednesday, September 1st at 8pm: On the second night we'll feature Thaddeus Tukes performing Bobby Hutcherson's "Cirrus", released in 1974. We'll also showcase live art by Arthur Wright! ALBUM BACKGROUND: "Cirrus finds Bobby Hutcherson resuming his partnership with tenor saxophonist Harold Land, and the results are quite good. The pair work with pianist Bill Henderson, trumpeter Woody Shaw, bassist Ray Drummond, drummer Larry Hancock, saxophonist/flautist Emmanuel Boyd and percussionist Kenneth Nash on this set of originals. The music is a little smoother than their earlier collaborations, but there are enough captivating, provocative moments to make the reunion a success." ~Thomas Erlewine PERFORMANCES BY: Thaddeus Tukes - Vibes/Marimba Nickolas Kaplan - Trumpet Rajiv Halim Tenor Sax/Alto Flute Stella Murray - Flute Chris Madsen - Tenor Sax Julius Tucker - Piano/Electric Piano Mary Halm - Bass Isaiah Spencer - Drums Jonathan Wenzel - Percussion LIVESTREAM ACCESS https://youtu.be/pXaX7RirAEI |
Saturday, September 4th at 8pm: On the fourth night we'll feature the Dana Hall Quintet performing Paul Motian's "Misterioso", released in 1987. The night will also showcase live art by Hillary Johnson! ALBUM BACKGROUND: "Although often overlooked, drummer Paul Motian led one of the most inventive jazz bands of the mid-1980s. His quintet, which featured the tenors of Joe Lovano and Jim Pepper, guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Ed Schuller, could play anything from swinging advanced hard bop and Ornette Coleman-type free bop to spacier improvising. Motian contributed seven of the nine numbers for this date; the quintet also performs Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso" and "Pannonica." Frisell is featured on "Byablue" the two tenors work together quite well, and the band definitely had its own sound." ~Scott Yanow PERFORMANCES BY: Dana Hall - Drums Geof Bradfield - Tenor John Wojciechowski - Alto/Tenor Dave Miller - Guitar Ethan Philion - Bass LIVESTREAM ACCESS https://youtu.be/spkwXET3plc |
Sunday, September 4th at 8pm: On the final night of our 8th year anniversary series we'll conclude with Alyssa Allgood performing Shirley Horn's "May The Music Never End", released in 2003. The night will also feature live art by Melanie Brown! ALBUM BACKGROUND: "Horn's trademark sound is the sparse, languid torch song, with atmospheric piano chords and her gentle and soulful vocals caressing the notes as she slowly lets them ease into the listener's ear. If it is indeed her swan song, then she went out the same way she came in: as a true classic". At the time of the album's recording, Horn had stopped playing piano for health-related reasons, and pianists George Mesterhazy and Ahmad Jamal were chosen to provide her accompaniment.. ~Tim Sendra PERFORMANCES BY: Alyssa Allgood - Vocals Eric Jacobson - Trumpet Julius Tucker - Piano Ethan Philion - Bass Jon Deitemyer - Drums LIVESTREAM ACCESS https://youtu.be/ZySMjzddA_c |
