The evening will also feature a solo exhibit by artist Jordi Pedrola who will do a live painting of the band’s performance. "By the time he recorded Grace Under Pressure in 1992, John Scofield had not only been enjoying an illustrious career as a side man for over 15 years (working with such luminaries as: Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Gary Burton, and Dave Liebman), but had also recorded and released 16 albums as a leader on both the Enja and Gramavision Labels. The early 90's marked the beginning of John Scofield's relationship with Blue Note records, which yielded seven albums, including Grace Under Pressure. Featuring Bill Frisell on guitar, Charlie Haden on bass, and Joey Baron on drums, this recording stands out as a slight departure from his working band at the time (with Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden, Bill Stewart), with whom he recorded three albums. John Scofield provides eleven original compositions to this date, which draw from a variety of musical influences (including bebop, country, rock, and the music of his contemporaries), demonstrating his broad scope as a composer. The tunes also serve as an ideal platform to showcase both guitarists’ unique improvising voices, all the while allowing the unrelentingly supportive rhythm section to take the music in different directions at will. In addition to the sound of Bill Frisell's acoustic guitar playing on a few tracks, several more are augmented by lush low-brass backgrounds, which subtly enhance the overall sonic palette of this record.” Dan Thatcher ~ June 1025 |
