Wednesday February 14th at 9pm: The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Saalik Ziyad Group performing Sam Cooke's "Mr. Soul", released in 1963. ALBUM BACKGROUND: "In 1963, Sam Cooke was a busy man releasing two records on RCA Victor. One of those being Mr. Soul, which was produced by Hugo & Luigi, a producing team and released in February . Besides Cooke, this record features a string section along with a rhythm section that accompanies Cooke. Although the strings can sometimes be over orchestrated, Cooke's soulful voice and all his nuances makes this record a record that shouldn't be ignored." - Lenard Simpson "This is [an album] that might be termed "cool" soul -- smooth and sometimes bluesy, in a low-key way, quietly emotive on numbers such as "These Foolish Things," with the hot moments in special abundance on numbers like "Chains of Love" and "Send Me Some Lovin'." But even in these cool, restrained settings, Cooke's was still one of the finest voices of his century, and worth taking in for every breath and nuance." -Bruce Eder PERFORMANCES BY: Saalik Ziyad - Vocals Ed Beard - Piano Zachary Biggus - Guitar David Williams - Bass Andy Sutton - Drums Featured Visual Artists: Arthur Wright Alex Puryear ADMISSION & LOCATION: $10 cover or $5 w/ student ID Doors open at 8pm.
