The very next night the John Wojciechowski Quintet will  perform Adderley’s 1966 release, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!" Live At "The Club".

ABLBUM BACKGROUND:
"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! wasn't actually recorded "Live at 'The Club'," as its subtitle says. This was actually a hoax was meant to publicize a friend's nightclub venture in Chicago, but Adderley actually recorded the album in Los Angeles, where his producer  set up a club in the Capitol studios, furnished with free drinks to an invitation-only audience. Naturally, the crowd is in an extremely good mood and Adderley's quintet, feeding off the energy in the room, gives them something to shout about."

This week we'll be continuing our Month of Cannonball with Rajiv Halim Quintet performing Adderley’s 1959 release, "Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago".

ABLBUM BACKGROUND:
"“Quintet in Chicago” was recorded in February, 1959, at universal Recording's Studio B, Chicago, with Bernie Clapper, president of the firm, at the audio controls and released on Mercury records. It features Wynton Kelly on Piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Jimmy Cobb on drums and John Coltrane on Tenor saxophone. These sidemen were working with the Miles Davis Group at the Sutherland Hotel in 1959 at the time. Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane has such a personal sound that can be heard throughout the record, especially on “Weaver of Dreams” and ‘Stars Fell on Alabama.’”

Wednesday, March 21st at 9pm:
Our fourth installment will feature the Ari Brown Quintet performing Adderley’s 1958 Blue Note release, "Something Else".

ABLBUM BACKGROUND:
“Cannonball Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles Davis'  ensemble with John Coltrane, eventually resulting in some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time (including Milestones and Kind of Blue). In March of 1958, Davis returned the favor by appearing alongside Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey on Adderley's all-star quintet to date for Blue Note, and the resulting session is indeed "Somethin' Else".

Both horn players are at their peak of lyrical invention, crafting gorgeous, flowing blues lines on "Autumn Leaves" and "One for Daddy-O," as the rhythm team
 creates a taut, focused groove."

For the grand finale, we'll conclude the month with the Mike Smith Quartet performing Adderley’s 1959 release, "Cannonball Takes Charge".

ABLBUM BACKGROUND:
"Adderley was on the verge of leaving Miles Davis's Sextet when he recorded the seven titles and two alternates that comprise this LP, the sixth in a seven-volume series of Riverside dates reissued by producer Orrin Keepnews. Accompanied by pianist Wynton Kelly and alternating bassists and drummers, Adderley is in fine form on these standards with the emphasis leaning a bit toward ballads and blues. Highlights include "Serenata," "Poor Butterfly" and two versions of "I Remember You."" - Scott Yanow
