Up Next: A Month of Mingus

We'll be kicking off our Month of Mingus with Joni Mitchell's album Mingus. ​This studio album was Charles Mingus' final collaboration, recorded months before his death in January of 1979. This album features bassist Jaco Pastorius from Weather Report along with a reunion of saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock.

Night two will feature both Changes One & Changes Two, released on Atlantic Records. Both albums were two bright points in the 70's jazz canon containing compositions that moved through chords as quick as an arrow. Just when it sounds like chaos will run wild...Snap! A measure starts and the band is completely back in, tight as a vice.

Night three will feature the 1973 album Mingus Moves, performed by the Jim Gailloreto Sextet. The original album featured Don Pullen on piano, Ronald Hampton on trumpet, George Adams on saxophone and  his longtime drummer, Dannie Richmond. One composition (Moves) also features the vocals of Honey Gordon and Doug Hammond.

Night four will feature his well known Mingus Ah Um album, debuted on Columbia in 1959, performed by the Vijay Tellis-Nayak Trio. ​Steve Huey (Allmusic.com) states that "Mingus' compositions and arrangements were always extremely focused, assimilating individual spontaneity into a firm consistency of mood, and that approach reaches an ultra-tight zenith on Mingus Ah Um."

The final night of our Month of Mingus series will feature his self titled album Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, released in 1961 on Nat Hentoff's independent label, Candid. The original quartet featured Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond  which constituted Mingus' core working band at the time. Hentoff concludes, "For once, in these sessions, everyone in a Mingus unit reached - and maintained - that level of daring and that power to make their instruments become extensions of themselves".

Really enjoyed this groups presentation of the music of Charles Mingus. Junius Paul & his group did a good job but this brought me memories of when this album was released & the beginning of my love of jazz & particularly the music of CM.Thanks!!
