Wednesday, February 1st at 9pm
The Garden of Souls will perform Ornette Coleman's Love Call and New York Is Now in their entirety.
BACKGROUND:
Ornette Coleman (March 9, 1930- June 11, 2015) was an American jazz saxophonist, violinist, trumpeter, and composer who was one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement of the 1960's. From the beginning of his career, Coleman's music and playing were in many ways unorthodox. His approach to harmony and chord progression was far less rigid than that of bebop performers; he was increasingly interested in playing what he heard rather than fitting it into predetermined chorus-structures and harmonies.
"With his milestone recordings of the late fifties, Ornette opened the gate to a whole new world which is still being explored today as it will be tomorrow. While the original quartet with its Atlantic output is rightly regarded as his most important achievement, these two albums rank among his most successful and accessible work, as uncompromising as they are. Writing an easy melodic line is often underrated or disregarded but Ornette has always been a composer with the very rare ability to fit a lot of music into his pieces. These two CDs once more lay proof to the fact that his music is, besides all other qualities, lasting." - Amazon.com
