For me, Pat Metheny’s “Bright Size Life” (ECM, 1976) remains one of the finest examples of forward thought in jazz music. On this his first recorded offering, Jaco Pastorius (bass) and Bob Moses (drums) complete the trio. Compositionally, stylistically, sonically, texturally, dynamically… this record is an invitation to experience and continually revisit the malleable roles of a rhythm section. To the listener, at least this listener, the music is as comfortable as it is demanding… as welcoming as it is assertive… as familiar as it is undiscovered.
