The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to welcome Nickolas Kaplan Quintet for a livestream performance of the 1954 release, “Clifford Brown & Max Roach”. The night will also feature an installation and live painting from visual artist Kristin Wenc!

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
'Clifford Brown and Max Roach' was the first recording of a quintet that changed jazz. It was tragically short lived; Clifford Brown and pianist Richie Powell (Bud's brother) were to die in the same car crash within two years of the album's release, an event that affected Max Roach for years to come. The music is based in bop but has outgrown its origins to such an extent that it is clearly one of the first great examples of hard bop. Clifford Brown is superb on trumpet, building clear, precise melody lines with such authority and control for a mere 24 year old....Harold Land, much overlooked, plays fluid, sinuous saxophone and shares real understanding with Clifford Brown in the many unison passages before breaking out into inventive and innovative solos. Richie Powell and George Morrow on piano and bass add to the modern, open approach inspired by Max Roach's fine drumming. Before forming this quintet with Clifford Brown, Max Roach had already established a lasting place in the history of the development of jazz...He transformed jazz drumming, pioneering an open style with emphasis away from heavy use of bass drum towards more subtle development of cross rhythms on ride cymbal, high hat and snare rim. His prodigious technique virtually defined modern jazz drumming."

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to welcome the Andy Baker Sextet for a livestream performance of Wayne Shorter's 1967 release, “Schizophrenia”. The night will also include an installation and live painting from visual artist Micah Rademacher!

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Wayne Shorter was at the peak of his creative powers when he recorded Schizophrenia in the spring of 1967. ...Shorter found a band that was capable of conveying his musical "schizophrenia," which means that this is a band that can play straight just as well as they can stretch the limits of jazz... And "unpredictable" is the operative phrase for this set of edgy post-bop. Shorter's compositions (as well as James Spaulding's lone contribution, "Kryptonite") have strong themes, but they lead into uncharted territory, constantly challenging the musicians and the listener. This music exists at the border between post-bop and free jazz -- it's grounded in post-bop, but it knows what is happening across the border. " - Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present Tim Seiser Sextet performing Weather Report's "Heavy Weather", released in 1977. The evening will also feature live art by visual artist Arthur Wright!

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Weather Report's biggest-selling album is that ideal thing, a popular and artistic success -- and for the same reasons. For one thing, Joe Zawinul revealed an unexpectedly potent commercial streak for the first time since his Cannonball Adderley days, contributing what has become a perennial hit, "Birdland.".. the full emergence of Jaco Pastorius as a co-leader; his dancing, staccato bass lifting itself out of the bass range as a third melodic voice, completely dominating his own ingenious "Teen Town" ...By now, Zawinul has become WR's de facto commander in the studio; his colorful synthesizers dictate the textures, his conceptions are carefully planned, with little of the freewheeling improvisation of only five years before. Wayne Shorter's saxophones are now reticent, if always eloquent, beams of light in Zawinul's general scheme while Alex Acuña shifts ably over to the drums and Manolo Badrena handles the percussion. ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Stan Getz's final recording, a two-CD live set of duets with pianist Kenny Barron that was cut just three months before his death, finds the great tenor in surprisingly creative form despite an occasional shortness of breath. Getz's tone is as beautiful as ever and he does not spare himself on this often exquisite set. His version of Charlie Haden's "First Song" is a highlight but none of the 14 performances are less than great. A brilliant farewell recording by a masterful jazzman."

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Lady In Satin (1958) is Billie’s penultimate album completed in her lifetime. Produced by Irving Townsend, and engineered by Fred Plaut, its sound is sensuous, rich and swelling with emotion...(the album} consists of songs Holiday had never recorded before, including the transcendent “You’ve Changed” and “I’m A Fool To Want You”, with arrangements by bandleader Ray Ellis. Holiday had loved his “Ellis in Wonderland” album and specifically asked to work with him. Soloists on the album included Mel Davis, Urbie Green, and bebop trombone pioneer J.J. Johnson."

July 8th: Larry Young’s “Unity’”

This month we continue our Facebook livestream performances with the Shultz/McCullough Quartet performing Larry Young's “Unity”, released in 1966. The evening will also feature a live art showcase by John Ross Wilson!

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Recorded in 1965, The title was chosen by Young because "although everybody on the date was very much an individualist, they were all in the same frame of mood. It was evident from the start that everything was fitting together." The album was Young's second for Blue Note, following on from Into Somethin'....Scott Yanow states that Unity "is considered Larry Young's finest recording." Billboard Magazine called the album "a sureshot for jazz fans". The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded it a rare crown and four-star rating, describing it as "Quite simply a masterpiece." Also, saxophonist Michael Brecker referred to the album as a favorite of his."

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present Mike Allemana performing Derek Bailey's "Ballads", released in 2002. The night will also include live painting by visual artist, Karol Hilker.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Ballads is stunningly gorgeous, lovely melodies like "Laura" being passionately stroked even as they abut against Bailey's questioning angularities and brusque, impolite commentary. The pure sound he elicits from his acoustic guitar is mouthwatering, so reverberant and alive. When he absolutely wrenches the melody of "Stella By Starlight" from the poor body of his instrument, it's enough to leave one gasping. And longtime Bailey fans might simply shake their heads in disbelief when he strums with schmaltz -- as well as beauty -- the sentimental theme from "My Buddy" before taking it on a circuitous walk. Whether one is glad or distressed that he chose to dip his toes into these waters, Ballads is a singularly lovely recording, one that certainly stands out in Bailey's oeuvre and one that is nigh impossible not to smile about and linger over. "

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"For a time, Julie London was as famous for her sexy album covers as for her singing. Her debut is her best, a set of fairly basic interpretations of standards in which she is accompanied tastefully by guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Leatherwood. "Cry Me a River" from this album, was her biggest hit, and her breathy versions of such numbers as "I Should Care," "Say It Isn't So," "Easy Street," and "Gone with the Wind" are quite haunting."

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present Carl Kennedy performing Mary Lou Williams' "Zodiac Suite", released in 1945. The evening will also feature live painting from visual artist Abena Motaboli.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Mary Lou Williams' Zodiac Suite, a 12-piece work with a different theme made for each of the signs of the zodiac (and keeping in mind the personalities of a few jazz musicians born during each period), was composed and first recorded in 1945. With the assistance of bassist Al Lucas and drummer Jack "The Bear" Parker, pianist Williams performs these moody and often introspective (but occasionally playful) sketches in a forward-looking swing style. Six alternate takes have been added to the original program on this CD reissue which, although not quite essential, has its interesting moments. "

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Eric Binder Quartet performing Pete La Roca’s 1965 release "Basra".

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“It is strange to realize that drummer Pete La Roca only led two albums during the prime years of his career, for this CD reissue of his initial date is a classic. La Roca's three originals ("Basra," which holds one's interest despite staying on one chord throughout, the blues "Candu," and the complex "Tears Come From Heaven") are stimulating but it is the other three songs that really bring out the best playing in the quartet (which is comprised of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Steve Kuhn, and bassist Steve Swallow in addition to La Roca). "Malaguena" is given a great deal of passion, Swallow's "Eiderdown" (heard in its initial recording) receives definitive treatment, and the ballad "Lazy Afternoon" is both haunting and very memorable; Henderson's tone perfectly fits that piece.”

The Jazz Record Art Collective is excited to present the Madsen/Bradfield Quintet performing Eddie Davis & Johnny Griffin’s "Lookin' at Monk!", released in 1961.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Originally recorded in 1961, this tribute program features two of the best tenor saxophonists of the period along with pianist Junior Mance and a rhythm section composed of bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley (both of whom would later work as Thelonious Monk sidemen). If the program seems a bit obvious ("'Round Midnight," "Epistrophy," "Well, You Needn't," etc.), bear in mind that this was only the second all-Monk program anyone had recorded and several of these numbers had yet to attain standard status. The playing is uniformly inventive and witty (both required attributes when approaching this repertoire), and Mance is particularly to be commended for maintaining a graceful and elegant attack and not trying to praise Monk by imitation.” -Rick Anderson

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Chris Greene Quintet performing Stan Getz' "Captain Marvel", released in 1974.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“One of the more remarkable aspects of Stan Getz's (1974) masterpiece is just how organic he was able to keep the sound. The band surrounding Getz on this Columbia date was led by Chick Corea with his Return to Forever (electric) bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Tony Williams, and Brazilian master percussionist Airto Moreira. This band, combining as it did the restlessness of electric jazz with Getz's trademark stubbornness in adhering to those principles that made modern jazz so great, made for a tension that came pouring out of the speakers with great mutual respect shining forth from every cut -- especially the steamy Latin-drenched title track. Captain Marvel is arguably the finest recording Getz made during the 1970s.”

December 18th: Duke Ellington's "The Nutcracker Suite"

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the return of the Michael Nearpass Large Ensemble performing Duke Ellington’s jazz interpretation of "The Nutcracker Suite" by Tchaikovsky.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"The Nutcracker Suite was recorded for the Columbia label in 1960 with arrangements by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Although the album was created directly from Tchaikovsky's work, the two composers didn't lean on Tchaikovsky for anything beyond the strength of a melody. 

In "Dance of the Reed-Pipes," considerations had to be made because there were no flutes in the Ellington band so the composition was rescored for two clarinets, written into a thicket of poking, overlapping brass lines. In the ''Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," rather than adapting  Tchaikovsky's celeste theme to Ellington's piano, the jazz composers wrote it for baritone and tenor saxophone. In the ''Waltz of The Flowers'' they let the stiffness out of the ''March'' in exchange for a loose, uptempo swing." - Ben Ratliff, New York Times.

December 6th: Chet Baker's "Let's Get Lost"

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Andrew Distel Quartet performing the soundtrack to Chet Baker’s documentary, "Let's Get Lost" from 1988.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Even though time and substances have given Baker the visage of a man twice his age, those inimitable pipes and velvet tone have worn surprisingly well. The track list is quite literally replete with something old, new, borrowed, and blue, well "Almost Blue," that is. He lifts the Elvis Costello composition, which is possibly a nod to their previous collaboration on Costello's Punch the Clock (1984), where Baker supplied a solo to "Shipbuilding." Among the old favorites are "Imagination," "You're My Thrill," "Every Time We Say Goodbye," "Daydream," and "Everything Happens to Me," each being entries from Baker's extensive repertoire.” ~ Lindsay Planer

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the  Artie Black Quintet performing Eddie Harris' "The In Sound", released in 1965.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"This is one of Eddie Harris' great records. The underrated but popular tenor saxophonist introduces his standard "Freedom Jazz Dance," plays one of the earlier versions of "The Shadow of Your Smile," romps on "Love for Sale" and "'S Wonderful," and also performs "Born to Be Blue" and his own "Cryin' Blues." Harris is heard in prime form in a quartet/quintet with pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Higgins, and part-time trumpeter Ray Codrington. ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Arguably Led Zeppelin's most divisive album, Houses of the Holy is simultaneously one of the band's most popular and misunderstood albums. Holy has sold more than 11 million copies in the United States since its release in 1973, but it was panned by critics (Rolling Stone's review claimed it was "one of the dullest and most confusing album [they] heard this year") and disappointed much of their fanbase upon its release. The blues-infused epic rock of their first four albums had been replaced by a more eclectic and progressive sound with influences ranging from prog metal to funk to reggae."

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Mike Smith Quintet performing Cannonball Adderley’s 1960 release of "Cannonball Adderley and The Poll-Winners".

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“The "Poll-Winners" at the time of this recording were Adderley, guitarist Wes Montgomery and bassist Ray Brown; together with Victor Feldman doubling on piano and vibes and drummer Louis Hayes they cut this excellent quintet date. This was the only meeting on records by Adderley and Montgomery and, although not quite a classic encounter, the music (highlighted by "The Chant," "Never Will I Marry" and two takes of "Au Privave") swings hard and is quite enjoyable.”

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Luke Malewicz Orchestra performing Count Basie's "Basie Straight Ahead", released in 1968.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
From 1968 to 1983 Sammy Nestico arranged ten albums for Basie. This date, his first for the band, demonstrates Nestico's talent for bringing a welcomed freshness to the familiar Basie idiom. As lead trombonist Grover Mitchell proudly declared at the time, "Best damn album we've made in five years!"

The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Greg Artry Quartet performing Art Blakey’s "Caravan", released in 1963. 

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“By the time that jazz icon/bandleader/percussionist Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers began recording for Riverside in the fall of 1962, Blakey had already been the spiritual center of the group for nearly 15 years. The unprecedented caliber of performers who had already passed through the revolving-door personnel reads like a who's who of 20th century jazz.

On Caravan he is joined by a quintet of concurrent and future all-stars. Likewise, it could be argued that each has never again been presented in such a fresh or inspired setting as on these recordings. In order to establish with any authority just how heavy (even for purveyors of hard bop) the players in this band are…Curtis Fuller (trombone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). With Blakey (drums) firmly at the helm, these Jazz Messengers deliver a scintillating synergy that doesn't sacrifice intensity for the sake of cadence. ”

This month we're excited to showcase a special series created by saxophonist, composer and bandleader Geof Bradfield.  Geof has chosen to recreate albums that stretch across genres and eras of jazz, which will be performed by different groups he has assembled on Wednesday evenings at The Fulton Street Collective.

Geof Bradfield will kick off his month long series with Paul Bley's "Turning Point", released in 1975!

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Recorded in the 1960s and released on Paul Bley’s own Improvising Artists label in 1975, Turning Point captures tenor saxophonist John Gilmore in a rare performance away from his long time employer Sun Ra. Carla Bley and Annette Peacock contribute the bulk of the compositions, including Carla Bley’s lyrical tribute to female film pioneer Ida Lupino.”

Geof Bradfield continues his month long series with Randy Weston's "Little Niles", released in 1958.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Little Niles (1958) was the first collaboration in a stunningly prolific four-decade partnership between Weston and trombonist/arranger Melba Liston. In his liner notes, Langston Hughes writes of the music that “all in three-quarter time, these charming little vignettes escape rigidity of beat by a fluid flow of counter-rhythms and melodies, one against another, that brings continuous delight."

For the third installment in Geof Bradfield's month long series he'll showcase the music of Thelonious Monk with Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd's "School Days", released in 1963.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Steve Lacy was not only an innovator on the soprano saxophone, but also led the first Thelonious Monk cover band. School Days (1963) languished for years out of print, but became a cult favorite among musicians nonetheless. Lacy, trombonist Roswell Rudd and company up the ante on Monk’s challenging harmonies by eschewing chordal instruments; drummer Dennis Charles and bassist Henry Grimes fill out the quartet.” ~Geof Bradfield

Geof Bradfield will conclude his month long series with Ornette Coleman's "Science Fiction", released in 1971.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Science Fiction (1971) brings several longtime Ornette Coleman associates to the table: drummers Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell, trumpeters Don Cherry and Bobby Bradford, tenor Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden. They are joined by poet David Henderson and Indian vocalist Asha Puthli to create a record that dramatically extends and expands Coleman’s soundscape.” -Geof Bradfield
