Wednesday, August 28th at 9pm:
We kick off night one of our Chicago Jazz Festival and JRAC Anniversary Series with Paul Giallorenzo Trio performing Herbie Nichols’ "LOVE, GLOOM, CASH, LOVE", released in 1957.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Recorded a year after his last landmark Blue Note dates, this album finds Nichols performing in the familiar trio setting again -- this time with Mingus drummer Dannie Richmond and bassist George Duvivier. These performances may be less animated than Nichols' earlier sides as a leader, but that's not to suggest the pianist's writing or playing had become pedestrian or predictable. . Richmond's characteristic bombast and humor are kept in check here. With the drummer maintaining straight, subdued rhythms, Nichols' complex melodies and solos shine that much brighter -- especially on such standout originals as the album's title track, "Beyond Recall," and "S'Crazy Pad."

Thursday, August 29th at 3:15pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is honored to be chosen again to be part of the Chicago Jazz Festival. The John Wojciechowski Quintet will be reprising their performance of Adderley’s "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!" from 1966.

***This performance will be held at the Claudia Cassidy Theater inside the Chicago Cultural Center. Free admission!***

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at "The Club" received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance – Group or Soloist with Group in 1967. Though the original liner notes state that it was recorded at the Club DeLisa in Chicago, it was actually recorded at Capitol's Hollywood studio with an invited audience and an open bar. The reason for this discrepancy, according to the liner notes in the CD reissue, is that Adderley and the new manager of Club DeLisa (which had been renamed "The Club", after operating for years in Chicago under its old name) were friends, and Adderley offered to give the club a bit of free publicity.” -Wikipedia

Thursday, August 29th at 9pm:
Night two we're proud to present the Sam Mosching Quartet performing John Coltrane’s "Crescent", released in 1964.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“John Coltrane's ‘Crescent’ from the spring of 1964 is an epic album, showing his meditative side that would serve as a perfect prelude to his immortal work A Love Supreme. His finest quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones supports the somewhat softer side of Coltrane, and while not completely in ballad style, the focus and accessible tone of this recording work wonders for anyone willing to sit back and let this music enrich and wash over you.”

Friday, August 30th at 9pm:
Night three we're excited to feature the Alyssa Allgood Quartet performing a night of Dinah Washington selections.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Dinah Washington was at once one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century -- beloved to her fans, devotees, and fellow singers; controversial to critics…Hers was a gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, marked by absolute clarity of diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing. Washington's personal life was turbulent, with seven marriages behind her, and her interpretations showed it, for she displayed a tough, totally unsentimental, yet still gripping hold on the universal subject of lost love."

Sunday September 1st at 9pm:
On Sunday night we conclude our Chicago Jazz Festival and JRAC Anniversary Series with the Chad McCullough Orchestra performing Miles Davis’ "Porgy and Bess", released in 1959.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Take George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, add Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans, and what do you get? A classic jazz album that--despite the fact that the material has been rendered almost overly familiar due to countless interpretations--still sounds remarkably fresh four decades after its initial release. Miles' soft yet piercing trumpet style is perfectly suited to Gershwin's melancholy melodies, Evans' musical direction of his 18-piece orchestra is impeccable, and their version of "Summertime" may well be the finest ever waxed. Davis and Evans teamed up for several recordings after this one (including the landmark Sketches of Spain), but Porgy & Bess still stands as one of their most successful collaborations."

August 21st: Steely Dan's "Countdown to Ecstasy"+"Aja"

8/1/2019

Wednesday, August 21st at 8pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present Neil Carson’s Day-Glo Freaks performing TWO Steely Dan albums in one night, featuring "Countdown To Ecstasy", released in 1973 and "Aja", released into 1977.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Countdown To Ecstasy is a riskier album, musically speaking, than its predecessor. Each of its eight songs have sophisticated, jazz-inflected interludes. Countdown to Ecstasy is the only time Steely Dan played it relatively straight, and its eight songs are rich with either musical or lyrical detail that their album rock or art rock contemporaries couldn't hope to match."

With Aja, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's obsession with sonic detail and fascination with composition reached new heights. A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. Instead, it's a measured and textured album, filled with subtle melodies and accomplished, jazzy solos that blend easily into the lush instrumental backdrops.”

July 24th: Buddy Rich's "Big Swing Face"

7/1/2019

Picture
Wednesday, July 24th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present Joel Baer and The Blueshift Big Band performing Buddy Rich’s "Big Swing Face", released in 1967.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Buddy Rich's orchestra was in its early prime, displaying a very impressive ensemble sound, charts by Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Bob Florence, Bill Potts and others, and such soloists as altoist Ernie Watts (a newcomer), trumpeter Bobby Shew, Jay Corre on tenor and the remarkable drummer/leader. Even with the presence of "Norwegian Wood" and "The Beat Goes On" (the latter features Rich's teenage daughter Cathe on a vocal), this is very much a swinging set. Rich has some outstanding solos and lots of drum breaks but does not hog the spotlight; he was justifiably proud of his band.”

5/30/2019

Wednesday, July 17th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Andrew Vogt Quartet performing Christian McBride’s "Live at Tonic", released in 2006.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Live at Tonic is a three-disc live album by American jazz bassist Christian McBride recorded at Tonic in New York January 10, 11, 2005.[5] The album was released on May 2, 2006 via Ropeadope Records label. Tonic was a music venue located at 107 Norfolk Street, New York City, which opened in the Spring of 1998 and closed in April 2007…John Fordham, writing for The Guardian commented: ‘McBride's roots lie in R&B, funk and Philly soul as much as bebop. This triple live album is an impressive commitment to the primacy of groove-based music, freedom, jazz and dance.’” ~Wikipedia

July 10th: Hank Mobley's "Roll Call"

5/24/2019

Picture
Wednesday, July 10th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Chris Greene Quintet performing Hank Mobley’s "Roll Call", released in 1960.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“From the first moment when Art Blakey comes crashing in to establish a kinetic Latin groove on the eponymous opening song, Hank Mobley's Roll Call explodes with energy. The quintet all work together flawlessly here, but Freddie Hubbard particularly shines as he plays off of Mobley's fluid riffs and carries more than a few lines himself, sounding particularly athletic and effortless on the closing track, "The Breakdown."

Mobley's performance throughout the recording is stylish without being restrained, and the strength of his songwriting shines on five of the album's six songs. A warm, laid-back, sweet version of "The More I See You" is also included, with a muted Hubbard sounding very much like Miles Davis. It is a nice complement to this collection of originals, which has often been overshadowed by Mobley's other late-'50s and early-'60s work but is definitely deserving of some attention of its own.”

June 26th: Weather Report's "Black Market"

5/22/2019

Picture
Wednesday, June 26th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Tim Seisser Sextet performing Weather Report's "Black Market", released in 1976.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Black Market is an instrumental jazz fusion album released by Weather Report in 1976. This album was produced by Joe Zawinuland Wayne Shorter. It was recorded in December 1975 and released in April 1976 through Columbia Records.

This is Weather Report's seventh overall album and the first with the bass player Jaco Pastorius who features on two tracks. The album draws heavily from African influences and its style could be described as "world fusion". The second track, "Cannon Ball" is a tribute to Zawinul's then recently deceased former band leader, saxophonist Cannonball Adderley.”

Wednesday, June 19th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Soul Message Quartet performing Jimmy McGriff & Hank Crawford’s "Soul Survivors", released in 1986!

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Hank Crawford's fifth in his long string of Milestone recordings was the first of several to team the soulful altoist with organist Jimmy McGriff. Guitarists George Benson and the lesser-known Jim Pittsburgh are on three songs apice while Bernard Purdie is on drums except on "Frim Fram Sauce" where Mel Lewis takes his spot. The superior material and the infectious swing supplied by McGriff and his rhythm mates inspire Hank Crawford to some of his best playing of the era.” ~Scott Yanow

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"This live session from the legendary Lighthouse features a particularly strong version of the Joe Henderson Quintet, which at the time included the leader on tenor, trumpeter Woody Shaw, keyboardist George Cables, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Lenny White. There are excellent remakes of "Mode for Joe" and "Blue Bossa" plus two new originals and a fine rendition of "'Round Midnight." " - Scott Yanow

Picture
Wednesday, May 29th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Luke Malewicz Orchestra performing Thad Jones/Mel Lewis' "Consummation", released in 1970.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Of the many albums recorded by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, this was the greatest. This set introduced Jones' best-known compositions, "A Child Is Born," and also has a colorful rendition of his sly "Tiptoe," and finds the big band ripping the roof off during the lengthy and very exciting "Fingers." The all-star cast, which includes flugelhornist Jones, drummer Lewis, trumpeter Marvin Stamm, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, tenor great Billy Harper, the reeds of Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion and Eddie Daniels, keyboardist Roland Hanna, and bassist Richard Davis, among others, is well served by Thad Jones' inventive and swinging arrangements. A classic.”

Wednesday, May 15th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Michael Benning Sextet performing Sam Jones' "Something in Common", released in 1977.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“In the 1970s, Jones' recordings as a leader were quite consistent, and Something in Common is a rewarding example of the type of solid, hard-swinging bop and post-bop that people expected from him. The only Jones piece that the sextet embraces is "Seven Minds"; other selections were written by Slide Hampton ("Every Man Is a King"), Cedar Walton ("Something in Common" and the better known "Bolivia"), and Blue Mitchell ("Blue Silver"). -Alex Henderson

Wednesday, May 8th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present Origin of Animal compiling its largest group to date performing Miles Davis' "Birth of The Cool", released in 1957.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"These three sessions -- two from early 1949, one from March 1950 -- are where the sound known as cool jazz essentially formed, Birth of the Cool remains one of the defining, pivotal moments in jazz. This is where the elasticity of bop was married with skillful, big-band arrangements and a relaxed, subdued mood that made it all seem easy, even at its most intricate...The virtuosity led to relaxing, stylish mood music as the end result -- the very thing that came to define West Coast or "cool" jazz -- but this music is so inventive, it remains alluring even after its influence has been thoroughly absorbed into the mainstream" ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

April: A Month of Selections by Greg Ward

2/28/2019

**This month we're proud to present a special month-long series lead by Chicago saxophonist, Greg Ward.
Each week Greg will lead a new ensemble and perform different albums that stretch across the genres and eras of jazz.
Performances will take place every Thursday throughout the month of April.**

Picture
Thursday April 4th at 9pm:
This week we'll kick off Greg Ward's month-long series with Kenny Garret's "Songbook", released in 1997.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Songbook is the first release by alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett to feature his frequent touring quartet -- pianist Kenny Kirkland, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts and bassist Nat Reeves -- on a program that consists entirely of Garrett's own compositions. Always inventive, curious, daring, and exuberant, Garrett's Songbook proves him worthy of the alto legacy that most people (both fans and musicians) seem to agree he carries, as he demonstrates what sounds like the uncanny ability to play two-faced -- one face looking forward to the freshness of new concepts and creations as yet undiscovered, yet with another face which simultaneously looks back to the fine, fierce alto tradition of Phil Woods and Charlie Parker.”  ~Chris Slawecki

PERFORMANCES BY:
Greg Ward - Alto Sax
Ryan Cohan - Piano
Ethan Philion - Bass
Greg Artry - Drums

Picture
Thursday April 11th at 9pm:
Week two of Greg Ward's month-long series will feature Cannonball Adderley's "Radio Nights", released in 1991.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Radio broadcasts from The Half Note in New York during the last week of 1967 and the first week of 1968 make up the set of distinctive material on Radio Nights. The live audience reaction puts the listener right there, to share in each exciting moment. Cannonball Adderley was at his best, and the ensembles remained loose…Roy McCurdy and Louis Hayes propelled the unit. The Adderley brothers' saxophone and cornet front line was always on target. Together, they made hot, straight-ahead magic. Cannonball is at his best soaring through 'Fiddler On The Roof' with complete freedom. Charles Lloyd joins the ensemble for 'Work Song,' 'The Song My Lady Sings' and 'Unit Seven.’… Radio Nights features Cannonball Adderley's ensemble in top form.” ~Jim Santella

Thursday April 18th at 9pm:
Week three of Greg Ward's month-long series will feature Lee Konitz' "Motion", released in 1961.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“This very spontaneous LP (altoist Lee Konitz had never played before in a trio with bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones) is quite successful and enjoyable. Konitz and his trio perform five familiar standards, stretching out on such tunes as "I Remember You," "All of Me" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." The music is searching but melodic, exploratory yet accessible. This is one of Konitz's better albums from the era.”

Thursday April 25th at 9pm:
The final week of Greg Ward's month-long series will conclude with John Coltrane's "Ballads", released in 1963.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"This is a beautiful collection showcasing Coltrane at his most accessible. It isn't what most people expected from Coltrane at the time as there's no sheets of sound, or squeaking and squawking so it's not entirely representative of his work, perhaps even a retrospective step at the time, however during his time with Davis, Prestige, and Atlantic to an extent, Coltrane proved he was a fine balladeer so the sound was nothing new. Of the three more mainstream Impulse albums recorded between the eponymous Coltrane and Impressions, this is easily my favourite. A great testament to the gentler side of Coltrane, and a must have.” ~Hendrix Lockhart

Thursday, March 28th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Alysha Monique/Morgan Pirtle Quintet for a special performance of "CARMEN McRAE/BETTY CARTER DUETS", released in 1987.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“This project is an unusual matchup between two very individual vocalists that generally works. Both Carmen McRae and Betty Carter show a lot of good humor during their duets, cracking occasional jokes and often jamming quite spontaneously. With suitable support from pianist Eric Gunnison, bassist Jim Hughart and drummer Winard Harper along with a very enthusiastic audience at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, Carter usually takes vocal honors while McRae comes up with the most humorous lines. Some of the ensembles are ragged but this encounter is overall quite successful.” ~Scott Yanow

March 13th: Ornette Coleman's "Crisis"

2/18/2019

Picture
Wednesday, March 13th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Nick Mazzarella Quintet performing Ornette Coleman’s "Crisis", released in 1969.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“A superb and under-recognized recording, Crisis is one-third of a trilogy of extraordinary albums -- the others being Broken Shadows and Science Fiction -- by Coleman's small groups of the late '60s and early '70s. A rendition of the piece "Broken Shadows" itself, a dirge of astonishing beauty second only to his "Lonely Woman," opens the live performance and offers solos of deep and poignant probity from Coleman and tenorist Dewey Redman, whose earthy growled tones counterbalanced the leader's so well for so long. "Comme Il Faut," with its own plaintive melodic thrust, provides the base elements from which Charlie Haden excavates gold, setting the stage for his own classic composition "Song for Che," which is given one of its very finest readings. Don Cherry is in wonderful, sandblasting form throughout, bringing in thematic material from his own recent investigations into Indian and African music, and Coleman's son, Ornette Denardo, has audibly matured both in technical prowess and comfort level. Crisis somehow lacks the reputation of the revolutionary Coleman albums from early in his career, but on purely musical grounds it ranks among his most satisfying works.” -Brian Olewnick

March 6th: Ammons/Stitt's "Boss Tenors"

2/15/2019

Picture
Wednesday, March 6th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Alex Beltran Quintet performing Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt's  "Boss Tenors", released in 1961.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“This encounter between tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt is a true classic. Ammons and Stitt teamed together many times over a three-decade period, including co-leading a band during 1950-1952, but Boss Tenors is arguably their finest recording. Backed by pianist John Houston, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer George Brown, Ammons and Stitt battle it out on "There Is No Greater Love," Ammons' "The One Before This," "Autumn Leaves," "Blues Up and Down," and Stitt's "Counter Clockwise." This is competitive bebop at its best, with Stitt and Ammons proving to be equal matches. Essential music for all jazz collections.” -Scott Yanow

February 13th: Lady GaGa + Tony Bennett's "Cheek to Cheek"

1/25/2019

Picture
Wednesday, February 13th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Amanda Wolff/Myles Hayes Sextet for a special Valentine performance of Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett’s "Cheek to Cheek", released in 2014.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“Lady Gaga’s classical training has always been key to her origin story, so this album with 88-year-old crooner Tony Bennett is no big surprise. Gaga has real chemistry with Bennett on breezily swinging tunes like Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes.” Befitting a singer who harnessed vocal firepower on huge club tracks, she sometimes blasts away at these songs rather than relaxing into them. But on challenges like the subtle Billy Strayhorn ballad “Lush Life,” the queen of the little monsters more than proves she can be a sophisticated lady too.”

February 6th: Sarah Vaughn's "Swingin' Easy"

1/18/2019

Picture
Wednesday, February 6th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Alyssa Allgood Quartet performing Sarah Vaughan’s "Swingin' Easy", released in 1957.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Swingin' Easy is one of Sarah Vaughan's lesser known albums for Emarcy, combining two separate trio sessions from 1954 and 1957. The earlier date includes pianist John Malachi (who also worked with singers like Dinah Washington, Billy Eckstine, and Al Hibbler, plus bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Roy Haynes. Vaughan's lush ballad technique is in full force in "Lover Man," "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," and "Body and Soul," while she scats in a midtempo setting of "If I Knew Then (What I Knew Now)" and her own "Shulie a Bop." The second trio include pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Richard Davis, and Haynes. Aside from a brisk, miniature treatment of "Linger Awhile" and a playful setting of "I Cried for You," the session is highlighted by a breezy "All of Me." Vaughan is in terrific form throughout both dates, with the songs mostly running around the three-minute mark.” ~Ken Dryden

January 24th: Chick Corea's "Hymn of The 7th Galaxy"

1/2/2019

Picture
Thursday, January 24th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Curt Bley Quartet performing Chick Corea's "Hymn of the 7th Galaxy", released in 1973.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“The second incarnation of Chick Corea's influential fusion group released only a single record, the magnificent Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. Featuring a more rock-oriented approach than the Flora Purim-Joe Farrell band that was responsible for both Return to Forever and Light as a Feather, Corea and old standby Stanley Clarke join forces here with propulsive drummer Lenny White and electric guitarist Bill Connors...With Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, Corea continues his streak of simply timeless fusion albums. The best of the electric RTF albums.”

January 16th: Jones/Pepper's "Mean What You Say"

12/22/2018

Picture
Wednesday, January 16th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Joel Baer Quintet performing Thad Jones/Pepper Adams' "Mean What You Say", released in 1966.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
“A classic set recorded for Milestone and reissued under the OJC imprint, this date is co-led by Thad Jones (heard throughout on flügelhorn) and baritonist Pepper Adams; pianist Duke Pearson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Mel Lewis complete the band. The high-quality hard bop unit performs four of Jones' originals, a song apiece by Carter and Pearson, and Burt Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby." Jones and Adams always made for a potent team, but the rise of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra meant that this particular quintet only lasted a short time”

January 10th: Dave Brubeck's "Time Out"

12/20/2018

Picture
Thursday, January 10th at 9pm:
The Jazz Record Art Collective is proud to present the Richard Johnson Quartet performing Dave Brubeck’s "Time Out", released in 1958.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, ‘Time Out’ is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It doesn't just sound sophisticated -- it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it is amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form." -Steve Huey
