Wednesday, September 21st The Neal Alger Quartet will perform their interpretation of Dave Holland Quartet's EXTENSIONS released on ECM Records in 1990. ALBUM BACKGROUND: Dave Holland's Extensions was his eighth album that was released on the ECM label. It features two members of his previous quintet -Steve Coleman and Marvin "Smitty" Smith - alongside guitarist Kevin Eubanks, in his first appearance on a Dave Holland record. With Holland, Eubanks, and Coleman contributing two tunes apiece, one can hear funk/hip-hop, free jazz, hints of African modal music, distorted rock guitar, M-Base phrasing, and of course, swing, among other varying sounds. While the general public is familiar with Eubanks and "Smitty" Smith from their involvement in the Jay Leno Tonight Show, Extensions documented their incredible risk-taking musicianship before they jumped ship to national television. "Eubanks astounds at every turn of Extensions. Having penned the opening and closing tracks, he has the first and last word on things and brings to the in-between a certain majesty to the scope of his improvisatory paths." - Tyran Grillo "It's hard-edged jazz, maybe acid-jazz, I don't know. Rock and jazz listeners with both likely enjoy it. The rhythms employed on some compositions are intricate and complex beyond belief yet they remain accessible." - Casper Rosewater Read more: ECM's Album Review Amazon.com Reviews PERFORMANCES BY: Aaron McEvers - Alto Sax Neal Alger - Guitar Larry Kohut - Bass Jeremy Cunningham - Drums https://www.facebook.com/events/1760571807543296/ ADMISSION & LOCATION $10 donation or $5 w/ valid student ID* CASH ONLY, smaller bills appreciated!
