*** SPECIAL PERFORMANCE IN NYC ***
Sunday, November 13th at 9pm
Christopher McBride Quintet will perform selections from Gigi Gryce's 1957 release JAZZ LAB.
ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"These recordings were made during the spring and early autumn of 1957. At 24 years old, Donald Byrd was already among the greatest trumpeters alive at that time. Alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce, who wrote the charts for everything heard on this disc aside from "I Remember Clifford," was an exceptionally talented arranger as well as a gifted composer. Unlike the rest of the Byrd/Gryce recordings from 1957, these have extra horns: Benny Powell's trombone, Julius Watkins' French horn, Don Butterfield's tuba, and Sahib Shihab's baritone sax. The rhythm section players were exceptionally solid: pianists Tommy Flanagan, Wade Legge, and Wynton Kelly; bassist Wendell Marshall; and master percussionist Art Taylor. Each track is a masterpiece of immaculately hip precision. Of the three installments in this label's Jazz Lab Project, this first volume is a glowing jewel nestled in the exact center of the lotus." The Larry Brown Jr. Quartet will be performing Wes Montgomery’s newly released 1959 recording One Night in Indy in its entirety.
ALBUM BACKGROUND:
"In 1959, Wes Montgomery sat in with the Eddie Higgins Trio, then featuring drummer Walter Perkins (and also an unknown bassist). Resonance Records arranged for the rights and released One Night in Indy in 2016. Montgomery's star was just beginning to rise -- he recorded two sessions for Riverside in 1958 -- and Higgins established himself as an attraction on the Chicago circuit but, at this time, they were essentially operating on the same level of stardom and, appropriately enough, this date showcases them equally, with Montgomery's rich runs nicely accentuating the elegance of Higgins. The music rolls easy and the appeal is that mellow yet lively interplay, as each leader seems to want nothing more than to play off of the other." -Stephen Thomas Erlewine
