The Jazz Record Art Collective is stretching its arms a bit in September with the Neil Carson Group performing Steely Dan's 1976 release of The Royal Scam.
The Royal Scam is the fifth album by Steely Dan, originally released by ABC Records in 1976.
"With its pairing of venomous lyrics to enthralling grooves, The Royal Scam contains some of the most potent work of Steely Dan’s career. The album begins with “Kid Charlemagne,” in which Donald Fagen addresses a fallen idol. The title track is a scathing, impressionistic vision of America’s settlement: the lyrics are at once funny and frightening, and the music is sublime. In a perfect paradoxical formula, “The Caves of Altamira,” and “Sign in Stranger,” mine rhythms that are relaxed yet fiercely precise." - Itunes
"Steely Dan’s musical surfaces were sleek and understated, smooth enough to almost be mistaken for easy-listening pop, and polished through countless takes that earned Mr. Becker and Mr. Fagen a daunting reputation as studio perfectionists." -Jon Pareles
