September 20th: Hank Mobley's "Soul Station"

8/22/2017

Wednesday, September 20th at 9pm
The Jazz Record Art Collective presents the Paul Mutzabaugh Quartet performing Hank Mobley’s 1960 Blue Note release of Soul Station.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
Soul Station is one of Mobley's best-known albums. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio and rooted in the hard bop style, Mobley's quartet features his past bandleader in the Jazz Messengers, drummer Art Blakey, and two future bandmates from his time in the Miles Davis Quintet, pianist Wynton Kelly and bassist Paul Chambers. The clean, uncomplicated sound that resulted from that grouping helps make it the best among his albums and a peak moment during a particularly strong period in his career.

The album's bookends are two standards, "Remember" by Irving Berlin and "If I Should Lose You" by Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin. Between these standards are four Mobley originals that, in contrast, reflect the best of small-group composition with their lightness and tight dynamics as featured in "This I Dig of You."

Sept 13: Steely Dan "The Royal Scam"

Wednesday, September 13th at 9pm
The Jazz Record Art Collective is stretching its arms a bit in September with the Neil Carson Group performing Steely Dan's 1976 release of The Royal Scam.

ALBUM BACKGROUND:
The Royal Scam is the fifth album by Steely Dan, originally released by ABC Records in 1976.

"With its pairing of venomous lyrics to enthralling grooves, The Royal Scam contains some of the most potent work of Steely Dan’s career. The album begins with “Kid Charlemagne,” in which Donald Fagen addresses a fallen idol. The title track is a scathing, impressionistic vision of America’s settlement: the lyrics are at once funny and frightening, and the music is sublime. In a perfect paradoxical formula, “The Caves of Altamira,” and “Sign in Stranger,” mine rhythms that are relaxed yet fiercely precise." - Itunes

"Steely Dan’s musical surfaces were sleek and understated, smooth enough to almost be mistaken for easy-listening pop, and polished through countless takes that earned Mr. Becker and Mr. Fagen a daunting reputation as studio perfectionists." -Jon Pareles

ALBUM BACKGROUND:

"One of the consistently intriguing characteristics of Jackie Mclean's jazz is that while he continues to explore new directions, he is also clearly rooted in the fundamentals of modern jazz. Or, as he would put it, "I never want to go 'outside' for too long a time without coming back 'inside' again."

This album reveals Jackie both "outside" and "inside" and is an absorbing illustration of how past, present and future interest in his composing and improvising." -Nat Hentoff

August: "The Cape Verdean Blues"

8/3/2017

Wednesday, August 16th at 9pm

After the success of Song for My Father, Horace Silver was moved to pay further tribute to his dad, not to mention connect with some of his roots. Silver's father was born in the island nation of Cape Verde (near West Africa) before emigrating to the United States. Not all of the tracks are directly influenced by the music of Cape Verde but there's a spirit of adventure that pervades the entire album.

The lineup -- featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson
and trumpeter Woody Shaw -- are some of the most modernist-leaning musicians Silver ever recorded with. They push Silver into more advanced territory than he was normally accustomed to working, with mild dissonances and a rawer edge to the playing. Silver also brought on bop trombone legend J.J. Johnson who ably handles some of the album's most challenging material, like the moody, swelling "Bonita" and the complex, up-tempo rhythms of "Nutville." Most interesting, though, is the lilting title track, "Cape Verdean Blues", which conjures the flavor of the islands with a blend of Latin-tinged rhythms and calypso melodies.
